On Mount Athos, beyond its relics and its historical and religious significance, there exists another, unseen and more essential dimension: that of the “angelic life of the monks—the life of daily repentance, divine worship, contemplation, and the labor of their obediences,” as Archimandrite Ephraim, Abbot of the Holy Great Monastery of Vatopedi, characteristically notes in the publication’s foreword.
Under the guidance of the Monastery, and through the lens of photographer Yannis Giannatos, an effort was made to capture this dimension without disturbing the monks’ daily life.
