The Historical and Folklore Museum of Rethymno, located in the centre of the old town, has been housed since 1977 in a two-storey listed building of the 17th century, an excellent example of an urban residence from the late Venetian period.
In the Museum’s five exhibition rooms, objects of traditional craftsmanship and folk art are presented, including textiles, embroideries, lace, ceramics, and baskets, as well as displays dedicated to traditional professions such as the coppersmith, the saddler, and the farrier. The ground floor hosts temporary exhibitions and educational programmes.

The aim of the Museum is to function as a modern research and educational centre for the preservation of Crete’s folk culture. At the same time, its operation has contributed decisively to the protection of the historic building.
Recognising the importance of the Museum’s work, AIGEA AMKE has supported, through its donations, both the restoration of the Venetian building and the strengthening of the Museum’s activities.
