The book records a restoration project of rare scale and significance, worthy of the long history of the Monastery and of the tradition of Greek benefaction in Egypt. Although the family of Thanasis and Marina Martinos has no roots in Egypt, their generous undertaking to restore the historic Monastery of Saint George constitutes an act of gratitude toward the Church and toward the Greek community of Egypt.
The history of the Monastery is presented in clear and accessible language by an interdisciplinary team of professors and researchers from Greece and abroad. Many of them have closely linked their scholarly work with the monument: from Professor Efthymios Soulogiannis, the foremost historian of the Greeks of Egypt—who wrote for this publication his final article—to the Academician Christos Zerefos, who offers a heartfelt reflection on the land of his ancestors; and from Peter Ziehan, head of the archaeological service in Abu Dhabi, to Professor Panagiotis Tzoumerkas, both of whom have devoted important scholarly works to the monastery.
Alongside them, the narrative of the monastery is enriched by the Greek-origin Alexandrian architect Mohamed Fouad Awad, whose designs guided the remarkable restoration project carried out through the collaboration of Greek and Egyptian specialists. Details of the restoration works are provided in a dedicated note by Georgios and Grigoris Penelis.
