In Arcadia, in the mountainous region of Gortynia—an area with a long and significant tradition in the intellectual and educational history of modern Hellenism—the Museum of Primary Education has been operating since 2019 in Psari Trikolonon. The Museum is developed across two exhibition spaces (with a total area of 250 sq.m.), housed in the renovated building of the former one-room primary school, which operated from 1936 to 1987, and in a newly constructed building, erected in 2000 adjacent to the old school.
The museum complex presents the history of primary education from the foundation of the modern Greek state to the 1980s, organized into thematic sections. It also features a reconstruction of the classroom with its original equipment and teaching materials, as they remained after the school’s closure, as well as the teacher’s room, living quarters, and office. In addition, the Museum includes a second-hand bookshop, an educational activities room, and a café, along with a courtyard and garden.
In this way, it offers a journey through the formative years of education, providing knowledge for younger visitors and a sense of nostalgia for older generations.
