The long and largely unknown history of Petraki Monastery, located in the center of Athens, is revealed through a monumental bilingual publication (Greek–English) released in 2020 in a limited, non-commercial edition.
Beyond its exploration of the monastery’s artistic treasures, the book presents the history of the monastery itself—developed under often difficult circumstances—as a parallel narrative to the history of the Greek capital. The accumulation of extensive landed property through the monastery’s revenues became a means of benefaction to the city of Athens after liberation. Its estates, spread across the entire Attica basin, supported the Greek state and numerous charitable institutions, effectively contributing to the development of modern Athens.
