The Maria Kokkoris Foundation for the Care of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities or Down Syndrome of the Holy Archdiocese of Athens was established in 2005 at the initiative of the late Archbishop Christodoulos and began operating in 2007.
Today, it operates four Supported Living Residences (SLRs), which accommodate persons with intellectual disabilities with adequate functional capacity. In this context, long-term accommodation and supported living services are provided on a 24-hour basis.
The “Athanasios Martinos” Supported Living Residences 1 and 2, located in Varnavas, Attica, in the area of Repe Tourkou, constitute a point of reference for the care of persons with special needs.
The initial donation by AIGEA AMKE in 2015 concerned the completion of a building of the Archdiocese of Athens, which had been intended to operate as an ecclesiastical nursing home with the capacity to accommodate approximately 30 persons. However, due to the increasing needs of the Maria Kokkoris Foundation, in 2019 AIGEA AMKE proceeded with a significant donation for the comprehensive renovation and functional upgrade of the building complex, in order to convert it into a Supported Living Residence.
Within the framework of this donation, and in order to secure the necessary licensing for the change of use, extensive technical works were carried out, including construction interventions, spatial reconfiguration, installation of active fire protection systems, and landscaping of the surrounding area.
Today, the building complex operates in accordance with modern standards, offering its residents a pleasant daily living environment, with respect for their needs and wishes, while maintaining and developing their skills and abilities to support the most independent living possible.
The Supported Living Residences are staffed by highly trained personnel and feature comfortable living and training areas, therapeutic pools, and a lush green surrounding environment. Today, they accommodate 14 residents, offering them quality of life and meaningful support.
The two Supported Living Residences were inaugurated in 2019 by His Beatitude the Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, Ieronymos II, and the then President of the Hellenic Republic, Prokopios Pavlopoulos. Since then, AIGEA AMKE has continued to actively support their operation.
The donation by AIGEA AMKE reflects the value of collective effort and social contribution. The conversion of the building complex into a Supported Living Residence has substantially improved the quality of life of its residents, creating a safe and welcoming environment where they receive the necessary care and support.
Moreover, the continued support of their operation by AIGEA AMKE constitutes an example of social responsibility and humanitarian contribution, thereby strengthening the work of the Church in protecting and supporting our vulnerable fellow citizens.
