The dissemination of the Gospel throughout the world has always been a central aim and mission of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Following a request by His Eminence Metropolitan Athenagoras of Mexico, the translation of the Gospel into Spanish was funded—an exacting and demanding process undertaken to ensure its accurate and faithful reception.
Under its spiritual jurisdiction, the Holy Metropolis encompasses all the countries of Central America—Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Belize—as well as the nations and islands of the Caribbean, including Cuba, Haiti, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Martinique, and Jamaica.
Today, the Holy Metropolis of Mexico counts more than 500,000 faithful, of whom approximately 350,000 are indigenous Guatemalans of Mayan heritage.
