The Industrial Educational Museum (BBEM) is a workshop that helps both children and adults discover the mining and metallurgical history of the Lavreotiki region, and more broadly, the industrial and productive history of Greece.
BBEM was founded in 2003 by Sophia Rok-Mela, an educator specialising in Science Education and Museum Education, and has since operated within the historic facilities of the French Mining Company of Lavrion (today the Lavrion Technological and Cultural Park – LTCP), with the essential support, among others, of the Municipality of Lavreotiki.
The Museum’s main activity consists of its experiential educational and guided programmes, which have been attended by more than 200,000 participants to date, primarily students, as well as visitors of all ages from Greece and abroad. In addition, BBEM runs “Technokypseli,” a framework programme of creative workshops offered both as a summer camp and as weekly sessions throughout the year, aimed at children from the local community.
These activities are complemented by research and the collection of material—particularly oral testimonies from former industrial workers—the development of print and digital content, and the creation and operation of thematic spaces. Finally, in fulfilling its mission, BBEM consistently cultivates multi-level collaborations with a wide range of organisations, based on shared scientific and social objectives.
