The Holy Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos in Makri, also known as the “Panagia of Evros,” is the largest women’s monastery in Thrace. Founded in 1978, it is now home to sixty nuns. The monastic complex includes the original katholikon, cells, a refectory, auxiliary facilities, workshops, a library, and four chapels.
The Monastery houses an exact copy of the icon of the “Panagia Tricherousa,” the original of which is kept at the Holy Monastery of Hilandar on Mount Athos and is attributed to Saint John of Damascus. The Monastery holds great significance for the border region of Evros and attracts large numbers of pilgrims each year. For this reason, the monastic community proceeded with the construction of a new church dedicated to the Three Hierarchs.
