The Holy Monastery of the Annunciation is located in the area of Kipoi, southwest of Chora on the island of Patmos. It is a women’s cenobitic monastery, established in 1937 by the Abbot of the Holy Monastery of Saint John the Theologian, who converted into a convent the hermitage that had existed on the site since 1613.
The sisterhood of the Monastery has been distinguished for its philanthropy, its contribution to education, and its high artistic standards in embroidery, icon painting, ecclesiastical tailoring, and Byzantine chant, as well as in beekeeping and organic cultivation.
Architecturally reminiscent of a Byzantine castle, the monastery houses a remarkable collection of icons and sacred heirlooms dating from the 15th to the 17th century.
