Described by its founders, Athanasios and Marina Martinos, as a “work of life,” the Church of Panagia Faneromeni in Vouliagmeni was erected in memory of their daughter, Athina, on land owned by the Church of Greece. The church was designed by architect Paraskevi Bozineki-Didoni as a free cross-in-square domed structure, with the dome resting on a twelve-sided drum. The inauguration of the church took place on 15 May 2008 and was officiated by the late Metropolitan of Glyfada, Pavlos.

The church is permeated by natural light. Its design respects the archetypal forms of ecclesiastical architecture, with the principal aim of creating a harmonious synthesis between tradition and a contemporary understanding of church design in the present day. Its interior, even when the church is closed, remains visible from the outside, achieving the greatest possible sense of “transparency.” The bell tower was conceived according to the same principle of “transparency.”

The iconographic programme was created by Giorgos Kordis. The iconographer sought to achieve a unified painterly ensemble, employing richly coloured backgrounds alongside areas of white, which lend a sense of light and radiance and convey a profound feeling of peace and serenity.
All designs for the carved wooden surfaces were executed by Charalambos Kamaros in Agiassos, on the island of Lesvos. Many elements of the church are gilded and painted. The gilding was carried out by a specialised team of craftsmen who travelled to Vouliagmeni from Saint Petersburg.

The doors, entrances, and windows were designed in bronze and manufactured in Italy. The iconostasis is wooden and gilded. The central chandelier, measuring 3.90 m in diameter, was designed in perforated bronze and constructed by the Kostopoulos Brothers. In collaboration with lighting architect Eirini Skafida, 250 light sources were discreetly integrated within it, directing light upward while softly diffusing it sideways and downward.
The landscaping of the surrounding area was designed by architect Elli Pangalou, with the aim of creating a welcoming and harmonious environment around the church. Specialised studies were also carried out for the exterior lighting, with particular emphasis on illuminating the bell tower and highlighting the architectural features of the complex.
An integral part of the church’s life is the parish spiritual centre, complemented by a small open-air amphitheatre. Within its hall, catechism classes are held, alongside lectures, blood donation initiatives, and musical events.
The overall design of Panagia Faneromeni was guided by the intention to create a church that feels familiar and welcoming—one that inspires a sense of peace and joy, while serving as a landmark and point of reference for Vouliagmeni.
