The Byzantine Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior, located in the settlement of Koumani in the community of Nomitsi, is one of the most elegant Byzantine monuments of Messenian Mani. It dates to the late 12th–13th century and belongs to the type of the simple four-column cross-in-square church with a small dome and three apses.
Its façades are enriched with elaborate ceramic decoration, while the interior is entirely covered with wall paintings executed in three phases. The earliest phase dates to the early 13th century, whereas the greater part of the church was decorated in the 16th–17th centuries. Noteworthy examples of Maniot marble carving include the capitals of the four columns, the marble arched templon, and the slab of the Holy Altar.
The monument had developed structural problems, and its wall paintings had suffered severe deterioration. Following the completion of stabilization and restoration works carried out by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Messenia, AIGEAS AMKE undertook the conservation of the painted decoration.
