The Holy Church of the Presentation of the Theotokos, also known as Panagia Mesosporitissa, stands atop a hill at Kitsi (or Thiti) in Koropi. The history of the area predates the construction of the church by many centuries, as near the hill of Mesosporitissa lay the ancient deme of Lamptrai of the Erechtheis tribe.
The erection of the church in the 18th century is closely connected with the rural population and the local agrarian economy. The Virgin Mary, venerated here as Mesosporitissa and celebrated on 21 November, is regarded as the protector of sowing.
The monument is an elongated structure consisting of a small main church, later additions of a spacious narthex, and a more recent exonarthex in the form of an open portico. The single-aisled main church, with a semi-hexagonal sanctuary apse, is entirely decorated with fine-quality wall paintings dated to 1763, according to the painted donor inscription above the western entrance.
As documented by archaeological investigations conducted by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Eastern Attica, the church was built on the site of an earlier structure—possibly of the Early Byzantine period—with additional annexes.
With a view to safeguarding the monument and preserving and enhancing its historical, aesthetic, and religious value, AIGEAS AMKE undertook in full the studies and the project for its restoration and conservation. The works, carried out under the supervision of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Eastern Attica and taking into account all construction phases of the church, included strengthening its structural capacity, restoring and conserving the façades and tiled roof. The project was completed with the landscaping of the surrounding area, aiming both to facilitate access for the faithful and to highlight the antiquities brought to light around the church.
