The Church of Saint Nicholas is situated at the foothills of Mount Parnitha, at the site known as Petra, near the settlement of Varybobi, within a pine-covered woodland area. Today, it forms part of the cemetery of the Holy Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos, which was constructed entirely in the mid-20th century.
The church belongs to the architectural type of the free-cross plan and most likely dates to the 13th century, as indicated by the wall paintings that were brought to light. In recent times, the monument had become altered by later interventions. The 1999 earthquake, with its epicenter in Parnitha, caused severe damage, making its stabilization and restoration imperative. The Monastery managed, through its own resources, to finance the structural consolidation and the repair of the roofs.

AIGEAS AMKE undertook the continuation and completion of the project, including the construction of a new marble templon, a floor of handmade ceramic tiles based on the original fragments that were found, new wooden window frames and perforated screens for the dome windows, the conservation of the fragmentarily preserved yet significant wall paintings, as well as the arrangement of the church’s immediate surroundings.
Upon completion of the works, the restoration and enhancement of a Byzantine monument—previously obscured by later alterations—was successfully achieved.
