The Church of Saint Irene in Palaia Fokaia was founded in 1932 and dedicated to the Saint, following the tradition of the original church in Old Phocaea of Asia Minor, from where the first Phocaean refugees had arrived. For its construction, the refugees used timber left over from the dismantling of the wooden huts in which they had initially lived, as these were gradually replaced with brick-built houses.
The church was rebuilt and acquired its present form in the 1950s.
