Holy Church of Saint George

The phrase inscribed on the wall behind the barbed wire at the Special Juvenile Detention Centre of Avlona—“Each passing day makes my release more certain”—captures the inmates’ sense of hope. Within this context, and guided by the belief that everyone has the right to worship, Athanasios and Marina Martinos responded to the request of the prison administration for the construction of a small church within the prison yard.
The Church of Saint George and its surrounding area were built entirely by the inmates themselves. The church was equipped with a wooden iconostasis and furnishings.
