1821–2021: Ten Conferences Marking the Bicentennial of the Greek War of Independence
The ten volumes containing the proceedings of the International Scientific Conferences organized by the Church of Greece in anticipation of the 200th anniversary of the Greek War of Independence offer a comprehensive chronicle of 1821.
The first volume presents memoirs and testimonies by Greeks and foreign observers, as well as the various interpretative approaches to the Revolution. The second volume examines the enduring consciousness of the Greek Nation and the role of the Church as a pillar of Hellenism, highlighting the importance of maritime activity and the institution of local communities, while also shedding light on figures such as Cyril Loukaris and Eugenios Voulgaris.
The third volume includes scholarly papers on revolutionary movements preceding 1821, while the fourth explores the differences between the European Enlightenment and the Modern Greek Enlightenment, outlining the ideological factors that led to the Revolution.
The fifth volume offers an extensive analysis of the international context and the interests of the Great Powers, and the sixth recounts the military conflicts of the struggle. The seventh volume presents the Constitutions and declarations of the Local and National Assemblies of the Revolution, while the eighth sketches significant personalities of the era.
The financial aspects of the struggle and the achievement of Independence are addressed in the ninth volume, and the tenth examines the impact of the Revolution on Greek and international literature, as well as on various forms of art.
