The Association of Folegandrians of Athens was founded in 1961. Its purpose is the preservation, documentation, and safeguarding of the customs, traditions, and folk heritage of Folegandros.
Following many years of research in museums—such as the Ethnological and Folklore Museum of Chrisso, Phocis, where an exact replica of the Folegandros costume is exhibited, and the Folklore Museum of Folegandros, where authentic pieces of the traditional attire have been preserved—the members of the Association succeeded in accurately reconstructing the island’s authentic traditional female costume. This costume was presented to the wider public for the first time during the 25 March Independence Day parade in Athens.
