In the special documentary episode Aeinaytes – Landmarks of Romiosyne, journalist Maria Vassara takes viewers on a journey through Constantinople and the Princes’ Islands, exploring emblematic monuments, schools, and churches that continue to preserve the memory and enduring presence of Hellenism in the City. Through these historic landmarks, the programme highlights the rich spiritual, educational, and cultural heritage of the Greek Orthodox community of Constantinople.
The programme features the Halki Theological School, the Primary School and Church of Saint Demetrios on Prinkipo, the Greek Orthodox School of Galata, the Zographeion Lyceum in Pera, the Church of the Annunciation at Tatavla, Saint John Chrysostom at Kalamıtsi, and the Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos on Tenedos. Through evocative imagery, historical accounts, and personal testimonies, these landmarks emerge as enduring symbols of education, faith, and the collective identity of the Greek Orthodox community of Constantinople.
A special place in the episode is devoted to the presence of His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, who reflects on the importance of preserving historical memory and sustaining the presence of the Romioi community in its age-old centres. The programme also highlights the restoration and enhancement of significant monuments and institutions of the Greek Orthodox community, made possible through the support of the Athanasios and Marina Martinos Foundation. This support has played a decisive role in the preservation, revival, and continued operation of historic landmarks of the Romioi heritage.
