SANTORINI as seen ON POSTCARDS up to 1956
Archive of Santorinian Studies Dimitris Tsitouras Collection
A unique “tour” through old photographs and postcards that travelled around the world and depict Santorini before the great earthquake of 1956 is offered in this album by the collector Dimitris Tsitouras, who has maintained a long-standing relationship with the island of Thera.
The bilingual edition in Greek and English includes 330 original cards from Tsitouras’s collection, with a total of 400 images, since—“I also borrowed several from various institutions and friends in order to present a more complete visual record of the island,” as he writes in the preface. In many cases he also reproduces the written messages on the cards, “as a remembrance, as the fragrance of their time. A postcard has always remained the shortest message—before it was replaced by modern electronic communication.” ✉️
