The term “skete” dates back to the early origins of Eastern Christian monasticism and refers to a small monastic community, deriving from the related term “asketerion” (a place of ascetic practice). According to the monk Ioannis Agiannannitis, life in the sketes represents a harmonious union of the communal and the hesychastic ideals of monasticism.
In the pages of this book, the authors present the vibrant and fruitful skete-based monasticism of Mount Athos, offering an introduction for those who have not yet visited this sacred place, as well as a reminder for those who have already made their pilgrimage to the “Garden of the Panagia.”
