The social and cultural life of Lavrio, already from the late 19th century, was intertwined with music and closely linked to the development of the Philharmonic bands that operated in the town. In 1893, the Philharmonic of the French Mining Company of Lavrio, “Euterpe,” was founded, essentially serving as the forerunner of the Municipal Philharmonic. In 1894, the “Philomouson Society” was established by the Greek Company, whose band participated in the opening ceremony of the first Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. The first Lavrio Municipal Philharmonic was founded in 1962 and, under the auspices of the Municipality, developed significant activity both within and beyond Lavrio. The present-day Philharmonic continues this legacy, preserving the long-standing, high-level musical tradition that is inextricably linked to the cultural identity of Lavrio. In addition to organizing numerous musical events and participating in festivals, musical activities, and official celebrations, the Philharmonic also operates as a conservatory, aiming to educate young people in various musical instruments.
AIGEA AMKE made a decisive contribution to upgrading the operation of the Lavrio Philharmonic by undertaking the full reconstruction and equipping of an old municipal building and its surrounding area, in order to house the Philharmonic. Upon completion of the project, a beautiful and fully equipped contemporary building was delivered to the residents of Lavrio—a true hub of culture for the city’s future generations.
