The distinguished archaeologist of prehistoric archaeology, Spyridon Marinatos (1901–1974), was a founding figure of Minoan archaeology. He carried out major excavations not only in his homeland of Kefalonia but also in various parts of Greece. His name, however, became most closely associated with his greatest discovery, the prehistoric settlement at Akrotiri on Santorini. It was there that he breathed his last and was buried.
The request for the installation of his bust at the very site he had served with such passion was promptly accepted by AEGEAS AMKE. The work was created by the sculptor Mary Papakonstantinou (1933–2020), a native of Oinousses. The award-winning artist, recipient of the Women of Europe Award, rendered the likeness of Spyridon Marinatos, capturing his features with particular sensitivity.
