The Holy Church of Panagitsa is located in the settlement of Karyovouni in the Mani region of Messenia. It is a small single-aisled, barrel-vaulted structure with a semicircular sanctuary apse to the east. Originally, the church was smaller and was later extended westwards, as recorded in an inscription dating this intervention to the year 1777. <\/p>\n\n
Inside the church, two layers of wall paintings are preserved. The earlier layer, covering the side walls and the sanctuary, stands out for its high quality of execution and the painter\u2019s refined, miniature-like detail, and appears to belong to the school of Demetrios and Georgios Moschos. The second layer, on the south wall and the iconostasis, is associated with the folk painting tradition of 18th-century Mani in Messenia. <\/p>\n\n
AEGEAS AMKE undertook the preventive conservation of the wall paintings and the repointing of the church\u2019s external fa\u00e7ades to improve waterproofing, under the supervision of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Messenia.<\/p>\n\n
