The Holy Church of Panagia Faneromeni, located southeast of Ai Stratigos at the site of Niokastro, stands out for its size and architectural quality. It is a cross-in-square church with an extended western arm and slender proportions, while an octagonal dome dominates at the crossing of the arms. The building remains surrounding the church suggest that it may have served as the katholikon of a monastery. <\/p>\n\n
Inside the church, the wall paintings are preserved in the dome, the pendentives, the arches of the transverse arm, and the sanctuary area, while an impressive painted decoration covers the built iconostasis. The painter, influenced by the renowned workshops of Nafplio (Kakavades and Moschoi) and by Cretan models, renders doctrinal and liturgical scenes with great skill. <\/p>\n\n
In the dome, Christ Pantokrator dominates, surrounded by angelic hosts, while the pendentives are adorned with figures of the Evangelists. On the arches, scenes from the Christological cycle are framed by prophets, while the iconostasis includes despotic icons and representations that give particular prominence to the Virgin Mary. <\/p>\n\n
The wall paintings, dating to the first decades of the 18th century, were preserved in poor condition, with parts of them collapsing. A restoration study was prepared by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Messenia, while the conservation works were carried out through a donation by AEGEAS AMKE, ensuring the preservation and enhancement of the monument. <\/p>\n\n
