The Holy Monastery of Saint Athanasios is located near the village of Filia in the region of Kalavryta and today functions as a dependency (metochion) of the Holy Monastery of Agia Lavra of Kalavryta. There are no precise historical records regarding its foundation; however, according to tradition, it dates back to the late 10th century.The monastery\u2019s katholikon is dedicated to Saint Athanasios the Great, Patriarch of Alexandria, and was built in 1763. It is a stone-built church of the three-aisled basilica type with an octagonal dome. In 1652 or 1653, the monastery was declared patriarchal and stavropegial.During the Greek War of Independence in 1821, the monastery made a significant contribution to the struggle, serving as a supply center and refuge for the fighters. In 1826, it was set on fire by the troops of Ibrahim Pasha. In 1943, it suffered further destruction when German forces burned the monastery, resulting in the loss of the carved wooden templon of the katholikon, many old icons, and valuable relics. In 2008, an earthquake caused additional damage to the monastic buildings.AIGEAS AMKE undertook the implementation of the approved studies for the restoration of the earthquake-damaged katholikon and the monastery\u2019s passage building (diavatiko). <\/p>\n\n
