{"id":4080,"date":"2024-11-15T16:26:33","date_gmt":"2024-11-15T14:26:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.iamm.gr\/work\/holy-church-of-saint-george-3\/"},"modified":"2026-02-11T17:09:14","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T15:09:14","slug":"holy-church-of-saint-george-3","status":"publish","type":"works","link":"https:\/\/www.iamm.gr\/en\/work\/holy-church-of-saint-george-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Holy Church of Saint George"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Holy Church of Saint George, located in the main square of Stemnitsa, was built in 1810, according to the founder\u2019s inscription preserved above the northern entrance.<br\/>According to local tradition, Veli Pasha granted the people of Stemnitsa a building permit of only 45 days, after which they were obliged to stop construction at whatever stage it had reached. This short deadline did not discourage the townspeople, who were determined to erect a substantial and imposing church. It is said that all contributed financially and through personal labor, while approximately two hundred of the finest builders and stonemasons were employed. In the end, the construction lasted 74 days.<br\/>The church belongs to the architectural type of the cross-in-square domed church. The elaborate carved wooden templon dates from after the Turkish raid of 1826, while some of the portable icons belong to the early 19th century.
