Following liberation from Ottoman rule, one of the community\u2019s primary concerns was the construction of a monumental church. The first committee for its erection was appointed in 1879. Building works began in 1886 and were completed in 1903.<br\/>The original design had been commissioned from the architect Ernst Ziller, but the project was ultimately completed by the architect Aristeidis Razis, who modified Ziller\u2019s initial plan of a domed cross-shaped basilica.<br\/>The church\u2019s painted decoration was executed by the renowned iconographer Dimitrios Georgantas, a pupil of the painters Nikephoros Lytras and Nikolaos Gyzis. The official inauguration took place on 21 May 1904, during the tenure of the Archbishop of Athens Theoklitos.<br\/>AIGEAS AMKE has supported the church\u2019s operation and the activities of the parish council in various ways, and has contributed to its conservation and protection.       <\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">DONATION OF THE NON-PROFIT CIVIL COMPANY AEGEAS<\/h4>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Conservation of the church\u2019s wall paintings.\u03a3\u03c5\u03bd\u03c4\u03ae\u03c1\u03b7\u03c3\u03b7 \u03b1\u03b3\u03b9\u03bf\u03b3\u03c1\u03b1\u03c6\u03b9\u03ce\u03bd \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5 \u03bd\u03b1\u03bf\u03cd.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Functional upgrading of the Holy Church (provision of equipment, air-conditioning, and sound system installation).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Support for the activities of the parish council (annual celebrations, organization of sporting events, catechetical programs).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Cathedral Church of Saint John stands in the central square of Markopoulo.
