It was inaugurated in 1864. According to local tradition, its construction was a vow made by the inhabitants for their liberation from Ottoman rule. The plot on which the church stands was granted to the community by the War of Independence fighter Mitros Merkouris.<br\/>The monumental bell tower was rebuilt between 1935 and 1937 based on designs by Anastasios Orlandos. The surviving painted decoration of the church was executed between 1906 and 1913 by the painter Nikolaos Louvaris and the decorative artist Ioannis Chrysochoos.<br\/>Prior to the commencement of conservation works in 2019, the wall paintings were facing several conservation issues, and their aesthetic quality had been significantly compromised. The templon and the bishop\u2019s throne had been coated with varnish, while the piers of the solea had been covered with plaster of a different color.<br\/>Following the approval of the necessary studies by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Eastern Attica, AIGEAS AMKE undertook the conservation of the sanctuary wall paintings, the conservation and restoration of the templon and the bishop\u2019s throne to their original form, as well as the aesthetic restoration of the solea piers. At the same time, earlier painted phases of the church were investigated using modern non-invasive methods.
