The church of Saint Paraskevi at Platsa, an important township of the Byzantine period, was built in 1412, according to the marble donor inscription preserved on its fa\u00e7ade. The exterior is enlivened with rich decorative brickwork, which brings to mind that of the church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour in nearby Langada. In the greater part of the interior, the wall-paintings of the early fifteenth century survive. The monument presented many problems, caused by environmental conditions as well as by the development of the village, as it is now located at a lower level than the more recent paved streets and the entrances to the adjacent buildings. The Non-profit Civil Company AEGEAS funded the project for the consolidation and complete restoration of the church, as well as the radical remodelling of its surrounds. <\/p>\n\n
The works, carried out under the supervision of the scientific personnel of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Messenia, also included the formation of a new terrace around the perimeter of the church, as close as possible to the initial ground level, as well as the construction of a retaining wall of the adjacent paved street, with a small stairway leading downwards. On completion of the project, not only the protection of the Byzantine monument was achieved, but also it harmonious enhancement within the village. <\/p>\n\n
