Kindergarten of Irakleia, Cyclades

The Kindergarten is located in the settlement of Panagia, the island’s main village (Chora). It was established as a public single-teacher kindergarten in order to provide preschool education to the small number of children of the island’s permanent residents. Together with the Primary School of Panagia, Irakleia, it constitutes the only primary education infrastructure on the island.

In recent years, the kindergarten has been incorporated into the extended-day programme, offering expanded hours that provide significant support to the island’s families, the majority of whom are engaged in livestock farming, fishing, and tourism.

For Irakleia, the Kindergarten is not merely an educational institution, but a vital pillar of the island’s survival. Its presence constitutes the strongest incentive for young families to remain on the island rather than relocate to urban centres, helping to ensure the continuity and future of the community.
