Since 1896 the church of the Evangelistria in Piraeus has been one of the most central parish churches in the port city. Architecturally it is of the domed cruciform type with Neoclassical features. Its interior is covered with wall-paintings, executed in various periods. It is said that in the early decades of the twentieth century the Evangelistria was the church ‘of consolation’ for travellers-pilgrims who did not manage to take a ship bound for the island of Tenos and the Holy Pilgrim Shrine of the Virgin.
