Giannis Orphanos was born and lives in Markopoulo, Attica. He started sailing in 2000 at the age of 10, in the Porto Rafti Sailing Club. From the Optimist class, in which he made his first steps, he gained also his first distinctions. In 2005 he competed in the two-person class, in which he distinguished himself at a panhellenic and a global level. In 2008 he competed in the Olympic 470 class, following all the programme of preparation for the Olympics. In recent years he is steadily in the top positions and in 2021 he began collaborating with Olympic victor Pavlos Kagialis in the 49er class, with the goal of participating in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
