The Palm Forest of Lavrion is a place of unique natural beauty in Attica. Its official name is Phoinikodasos Kyprianou (Palm Forest of Kyprianos). About 400 palm trees were planted here around 1880 and are now an integral element of the area’s history and a landmark of the Municipality of Lavreotiki. The planting of the trees was a pioneering measure of biological waste water treatment, as the roots of the palms absorbed the effluents from the town. During the period when red palm weevil infestation was causing enormous damage to most of the palm trees in Greece, the Non-profit Civil Company AEGEAS made a decisive contribution to saving the palm forest, by covering the cost of works for its conservation and preservation from entomological pests for several years running. As a result, the Palm Forest is still thriving.
