The Course of Greek Merchant Shipping Through the Ages. This publication of the Hellenic Maritime Museum presents the development of Greek merchant shipping across the centuries.
The “voyage” it invites us to follow begins in the Mesolithic period—when we encounter the earliest evidence of maritime trade in the Aegean and the thalassocracy of the Minoans—and reaches the modern commercial fleets of Greek shipowners. Ioannis Paloumbis presents, in a concise manner, the most important milestones of this long journey and the continuous presence of the Greeks at sea. While addressed to a broad audience, the publication maintains a solid scholarly foundation in the information it provides.
The texts are accompanied by rich illustrative material drawn from museums, ephorates of antiquities, foundations, organizations, and private collectors, documenting a maritime history that spans more than one hundred centuries.
