Although they did not come from a seafaring family, the brothers Meletis and Kleovoulos Methenitis made the most of the opportunities offered by their urban background and, combined with their growing love for the sea, forged a productive course in shipping. They acquired their first vessel in 1964, at a time when Greek shipping was dynamically returning to its roots.
Their example is of particular significance and contributes to a broader understanding of the Greek shipping miracle. The book was edited by the distinguished expert in the field, Georgios M. Foustanos, and, as he notes in his introduction, it represents “Thanasis Martinos’ expression of gratitude to two men who were for him both teachers and inspirations for his own family’s involvement in merchant shipping.”
