The Korydallos Prison Psychiatric Hospital (K.P.P.H.) operates at Directorate level under the Ministry of Justice, Transparency and Human Rights, as a detention facility. It is integrated into the National Health System and functions under the scientific responsibility and supervision of Attikon University General Hospital. Prisoners from correctional facilities across the country are referred there for forensic assessment and psychiatric hospitalisation. Many of the institution’s nearly 200 inmates suffer from chronic and severe mental disorders.
With particular sensitivity to issues of mental health and equal opportunities for all citizens, AIGEA AMKE carried out two significant donations to the Korydallos Prison Psychiatric Hospital, aiming to improve the living conditions of its inmates. The first concerned the renovation of part of the ground-floor detention area for severely ill prisoners (painting works and repair of industrial flooring), and the second the refurbishment of the facility’s courtyard, which plays a vital role in inmates’ socialisation, physical exercise, and meetings with their families. Following the completion of the donation, the old and heavily worn courtyard was radically upgraded, including the construction of a new 5-a-side football pitch with artificial turf, the installation of outdoor fitness equipment on new colourful poured safety flooring, and seating areas with tables and chairs.
