In collective memory, the Asia Minor Catastrophe has been inscribed as one of the greatest human tragedies of the 20th century. Its consequences were so profound that the social, political, and cultural structure of Greece and the coastal regions of Turkey (the Ottoman Empire) changed fundamentally. Undoubtedly, Saint Chrysostomos, Metropolitan of Smyrna and Ethno-Hieromartyr, stands among the most significant figures of that time.
His statue, which has stood in the courtyard of the Church of the Holy Trinity in Glyfada since May 2014, funded by AEGEAS AMKE, formed part of the broader redevelopment of the church’s surrounding area. It constitutes a minimal tribute to his memory and the fulfilment of a deeply held wish of the late Metropolitan of Glyfada, Pavlos. The sculptor Nikos Georgiou created the work with reverence, highlighting the eminent personality of the Hierarch.
