The chapel of Panagia Katafygiotissa is located in Katafygi Bay, in the settlement of “Aeolos.” In 2004, the iconographic decoration of the church was entrusted to Dimitris Mytaras. The renowned painter did not follow traditional iconographic models. His compositions do not depict saints, but rather painted human figures in flight—sometimes with wings, sometimes without—arranged in dense narrative groupings among birds and plants. To the right and left of the iconostasis stand, without austerity, the only two icons: Christ and the Virgin, respectively, both embraced by winged human figures. Mytaras referred to this as his “supplication,” adding that this was how he “envisioned heaven.”
