The Holy Monastery of “Ypsos,” or Ypseni as it came to be known during the 20th century, is dedicated to the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos. It is considered one of the oldest monasteries on the island of Rhodes, as archaeological findings attest to its existence from the early Christian period. Its exact date of foundation has not been historically established.
The reconstruction of the katholikon was completed in 1855. The Monastery of Panagia Ypseni served as an important spiritual centre of its time and, for the island of Rhodes, stood as a guardian of faith, identity, and language.
Following the devastating wildfire of 2023, AIGEAS AMKE responded immediately to the monastery’s request and contributed to the restoration of its building infrastructure.
