Holy Church of the Dormition of the Virgin

Palaia Kouteli, located at 963 metres above sea level, is a village in the former district of Kalavryta which is today part of the Local Community of Kouteli. Until the 1970s it was the initial village, until it was abandoned in order to create the new village at a lower altitude. The church dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin (Koimesis tis Theotokou), built in 1877, is a large three-aisle basilica with special mural decoration. The triple complex of the church, the plane tree dominating the forecourt and the stone domed fountain is a listed monument. Extensive technical interventions were carried out to remedy the serious damage to the church due to underground water, seismic tremors and the roots of the very old plane tree.
