One of the most historic churches of the Peloponnese, the Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos at the entrance of the village dates to the late 19th century.
According to the memoirs of Theodoros Kolokotronis, after the capture of Karytaina by the Ottomans, a war council was held at Chrysovitsi. When Kolokotronis proposed the siege of Tripolitsa, the other captains rejected his plan and departed. Disheartened, he entered the village church and sought the help of the Virgin Mary. On 28 April 1821, the chieftains returned to Chrysovitsi and, inside the church, appointed him Commander-in-Chief of the Struggle, thus initiating the siege of Tripolitsa.
Each year, in commemoration of this event, the Association of Chrysovitsiotes, together with the Municipality of Tripoli and the Holy Metropolis of Mantineia and Kynouria, organizes a celebratory event.
Recognizing the historical significance of the Church of the Panagia, AIGEAS AMKE proceeded with the redevelopment of its surrounding area and the restoration of the church’s narthex.
