The post-Byzantine Church of Saint Panteleimon in Paiania is located on the northern outskirts of the town, along the street bearing its name. It is a small, single-aisled, timber-roofed longitudinal church of simple form, without notable morphological features.
Approximately at the center of the church stands a carefully constructed reinforcing poros-stone arch, attesting to the builder’s skill in such structures. The wooden roof consists of closely spaced wooden laths (venia), a feature found in several chapels in the wider region. The church’s simple typology, its roof structure, the reinforcing arch, and the rather rough masonry construction are characteristic of a considerable number of churches in Paiania and the surrounding area, dating to the 17th–18th centuries.
The templon is built of masonry and, according to an inscribed date on the marble jamb of the Royal Door, appears to have been constructed in 1836. The interior once bore painted decoration, now preserved only fragmentarily in the sanctuary, in the eastern section of the nave, and on the reinforcing arch. The Virgin Platytera in the semi-dome of the apse may originally have been depicted half-length, in the iconographic type of the Blachernitissa.
AIGEAS AMKE undertook the restoration of the church and the landscaping of its surrounding area, in accordance with the approved study and under the supervision of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Eastern Attica.
